The reason he could tape the shinai box to the case is because airlines allow skiiers, hunters, and fishermen to pack a bag for their garments and a long sleever case for their skis or rifles or fishing poles. What I do when I travel is put my shinai in a ski sleeve and my bogu in a sturdy ski garmet case, which is plenty big because it's designed to hold ski boots, helmet, goggles, etc. All airlines have a "ski set price" which is usually cheaper than the cost of checking an extra suitcase. So, I recommend buying a ski travel set and shortening the sleeve for the skis, or a similar sports set, which is airline-approved.

Dear Mr. Geoff,
I think kendo has given to me a lot in a very difficult period of my life, so I'd like to tell my opinion.

In a very simple line of reasoning, kendo like an Olimpic sport would be identical to fencing (in my country fencing is quite popular). We all choose kendo for the differences from fencing, from football and from all european sports. We choose kendo for the spiritual strenght and many other differences.

Unfortunately at my Dojo we don't have "numerous conversations" (we haven't them at all) pursuing our Sensei "look at me and try" philosopy.
As result there is a few people who go further than 2nd dan and a lot of withdraws.

This was a very good article, clearly written and nicely done. I rather enjoyed it. I am a ni-dan and you are correct, this subject is avoided way too much. I always ask about sen-no-sen, go-no-sen, and sen-sen-no-sen and the reactions I get are less than favorable. To be able to put into words the feeling is awesome. I look forward to reading your next dissertation sir!

This seems to be normal, as a result of a running injury my physio encouraged me to try to run barefoot/with minimal footwear and walk barefoot at home to improve proprioception, is amazing to see your feet spread out when you step. As you may know there has been a lot of hype and debate about this concept. There are some very interesting articles from the natural running center (http://naturalrunningcenter.com/), is run by reputable medical proffessionals and athletes. Seems like our footwear reshapes our feet and in the modern developed world we are changing their shape from a very young age with our footwear so it seems natural that they widen without it.
